Lakeview Village {Custom} | Mudroom
A bright space with room for everything and everyone
The mudroom in Canadian homes is the high traffic zone of the house, so when designing our custom homes for clients, we spend a lot of time ensuring that we get this space just right. For this particular custom home in Lakeview Village, a fantastic community in the south of Calgary, we created a bright and welcoming space that will serve as the main entry and exit for this young family.
The clients loved the look of encaustic cement tile flooring; however, we needed a more practical and durable option. After some time sourcing, we found this amazing porcelain tile from Saltillo, and we knew we had a winner. It has a simple design and a beautiful soft pallet that blends perfectly with the millwork.
With all of our millwork being built by hand, on-site out of raw materials, we can add simple yet beautiful detailing to every space. For the mudroom cabinetry, we grounded the bench with a furniture base detail, topped it with a white oak bench-top for extra durability, and added curved gable detailing on the ends. It is the little details like these that allow our homes to stand apart from others in Calgary.
Across from the built-in bench, we installed a magnetic chalkboard for the family to have fun with. A great little spot to write down daily reminders, maybe what to pick up at the grocery store, and a space that gives the littles a place to be creative. A simple frame detailing was added with extra casing material that we had leftover, and we built a small lipped ledge for the chalk & eraser to land. The overall footprint of the dog room is 6’ x 6’, a great size that didn’t impede into the mudroom. To add to the functionality of this design, we added a built-in pull out dog food cabinet with additional storage for leashes and treats.
We had so much fun creating this room for our clients and their pets. Taking time to listen and learn what your clients' needs are is the key to a fantastic custom home building experience, and this particular home was a prime example. Our goal with each home that we design & build is that it will be a reflection of our clients. After all, we are building and creating it for them!!
